History

Glenda Ferguson imagined an arts and craft complex dedicated to assisting Northland's talented artisans, an initiative where those seeking 'the next step' would find valuable help in marketing their work through encouragement, feedback, and presentation, and where the established artisans of Northland could display and outlet their product in a location as inspirational as the work itself.

In 2003, with the aid of a few committed helpers, the transformation of a large, dark windowless building into a light and cheerful gallery /shop/ display area saw her dream become a reality.

The BACH opened in the thriving Town Basin quay area of Whangārei and has been a huge success with both local residents and the members/artisans involved.

Come see for yourself.

The BACH Cooperative

The BACH Inc. is more than just a Craft Cooperative - it's a thriving community. With approximately 100 members, we are Northland's (and very probably New Zealand's) largest cooperative, all working together to produce and supply a vast array of quality products.

Membership fees and commissions levied on sales provide the revenue to cover operating expenses, and the commission rate varies depending on involvement within the enterprise.

We pride ourselves on offering the best and 99% locally made products.

If you haven't been to see us in Whangārei, pop down to the Town Basin, take a look and have a chat.

The BACH Membership

At The BACH, we take pride in our commitment to quality. We have an established procedure to ensure that the quality of our arts and crafts remains at the highest level and invite Northland artisans to apply for membership to The BACH in order to enjoy the benefits associated with this.

In addition to our members' work, we do source a limited amount of high-quality products to complement our range.

If you are a Northland Artisan interested in having your products showcased at The BACH or becoming a member, please feel free to contact us.

Community Tapestry Project

A standout feature in the gallery is our magnificent tapestry loom, originally made to host an ambitious community weaving project by the Whangārei Creative Fibre Group, “ Whangārei Our Place.” Glenda and Brian Ferguson designed and built the huge loom using seasoned native timber from their rural property on the outskirts of Whangārei.

The 3m by 4.3m “ Whangārei Our Place” tapestry was completed in 2016 and gifted to the people of Whangārei. Since then, a new project, “Town Basin—Our History,” has kept our weavers and the public engaged in this fascinating craft.

The latest project comprises four panoramic scenes that are snapshots of the Whangārei Town Basin from pre-European settlement to the present day.

Everyone is welcome to watch our weavers at work on the central scene or to sit alongside them and try their hand at learning the basics on the smaller panels on each side.
